Gators Get Back In the Win Column Against Bengals

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor shot almost 50 percent from the field and got back into the win column on Saturday afternoon with an 81-64 victory over the visiting Maine-Fort Kent Bengals.

The Gators improve to 11-8 on the year and Maine-Fort Kent falls to 13-7.

Five Gators scored in double figures led by junior guard Alexis Lee's (Akron, Ohio) 15-point performance. Junior Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.) and freshman Erica Jones (Atlanta, Ga.) each had 14 points, while freshman guards Shaquanda Middleton (Savannah, Ga.) and Cadejia Matthews-Austin (Boston, Mass.) had 11 and 10 respectively. Senior Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.) led the team with 10 rebounds.

The Bengals got a strong double-double performance from senior center Ericka Saucier (Waldoboro, Calif.) as she scored 24 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, both game-highs.

The scoring came slowly early on as the teams made only one field goal in first five minutes of the game. The teams started to settle in after that bumpy streak as the shots started to fall.

The game remained tight until the waning minutes of the half when the hosts outscored the guests 15-6 over a four-minute period to close out the period with a 43-29 advantage.

Period number two started off much faster than the first as both teams came out shooting. The Gators extended their lead to 19 in the first two minutes of the period thanks to a pair of buckets by Lynch, the second coming from beyond the arc.

After a junior Samantha Carapellucci (Fort Kent, Maine) and Saucier each made a pair of layups, senior Ziggy Brown (Uniondale, N.Y.) completed an old-fashioned three-point play to get the Bengals back within 10.

The Gators had an answer however, as they went on a 10-0 run, sparked by a pair of threes by Matthews-Austin to move the gap up to 20.  After another Saucier lay-in, the home team would grab its largest lead of the afternoon when Middleton and freshman Sabrina Vail (Lowell, Mass.) each hit from distance to make the gap 24.

The visitors shot 40.6 percent from the field in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome the large deficit as Pine Manor came away with the victory.

Due to the snowstorm, the Gators next game will be Monday, Feb. 16 at 7 p.m. when they host Johnson State. This is the makeup from the Jan. 27 game that was postponed due to snow.
