WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) junior Tiffany Mapusaga's (Waianae, Hawaii) match-high 11 kills were too much for the Gators to overcome as they dropped their non-conference match with the Blue Jays 3-0 (25-10, 25-14, 25-13) on Wednesday night.
With the loss, Pine Manor's record falls to 8-16, while USJ improves to 15-3.
Sophomore Susan Le (Lowell, Mass.) led the Gators with six kills and collected 11 digs. Senior Destiny Mann (Orlando, Fla.) paced the team with 13 digs. First-year setter Ashley Whiteshield (Seward, Alaska) dished out 14 assists for the visitors.
The opening set started off very close with the score even at seven. The Blue Jays proceeded to win 18 of the next 21 points, including an 11-point rally toward the end of the set. Mapusaga and sophomore Cassandra Grimaldi (Manchester, Conn.) each had three kills in the series helping the hosts to the 25-10 first set win.
Set number two followed a similar story. The game was close early on with the two teams trading scores. With USJ leading 16-13, the Blue Jays went on an eight-point run, including four of Justine Walicki's (Plainville, Conn.) match-high five service aces, and went on to win the set 25-14.
The Blue Jays led the third and final set whole way as they finished the sweep with a 25-13 win.
The Blue Jays are back in action on Saturday when they host Emmanuel and Johnson and Wales (RI) in a GNAC tri-match starting at 10 a.m.
Pine Manor comes home on Saturday to close out its regular season with a double-header agaisnt the University of Maine-Presque Isle. The first match begins at noon.
