CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Midway through the second half sophomore Cadejia Matthews-Austin (Boston, Mass.) scored the first goal of Gators' season and the first of her collegiate career. However, the result did not favor the hosts as they fell to crosstown rival Mount Ida, 7-1, on Tuesday afternoon at Hedley Field.
Matthews-Austin had Pine Manor's only shot on goal. Freshman goalkeeper Jesta Gilmore made 12 saves for the Gators, but took the loss in her first collegiate start.
The Mustangs, who outshot their opponents 29-6, spread out the scoring with 10 players recording at least one point. They were led by freshman forward Ashley Koll (Arlington, Mass.) who got her collegiate career off to a strong start with a pair of goals. Graduate Student Nickole Soto (Marlboro, Mass.) got the start in net for the Mustangs and earned the win.
The guests jumped on top of the Gators early when senior forward Isabelle Moody (Naugatuck, Conn.) received a ball from sophomore Morgan Rzonca (Bristol, Conn.) on the left wing and put it in the side netting in just the 5'. Mount Ida would add a second just four minutes later when sophomore Alee Bonola (Windsor, Conn.) collected her own rebound and beat the keeper.
Three freshman collected their first collegiate goals for Mount Ida to close out the first half scoring. First midfielder Emily Oltmanns (Golden, Colo.), who had a game-high eight shots, received a centering pass from junior Alex Lincoln (Stamford, Conn.) and hit a long strike from about thirty yards out to beat Gilmore. Later in the half, Deirdre Volk (Windsor, Conn.) finished a Heather Pollack (Middleton, Mass.) corner and Koll scored her first of the afternoon.
In the second half, Hannah Brackett (Voorheesville, N.Y.) and Koll each scored to extend the Mustang lead to 7. Finally in the 64', Matthews-Austin was able to break free from the defense and helped the hosts avoid the shutout by sliding a low shot inside the left post.
Mount Ida will return on to play their home opener on Thursday night against Curry. Kickoff for that game is at 7 p.m.
The next test for the Gators comes on Saturday when they host Becker at 1 p.m. in game one of a soccer doubleheader at Hedley Field.
