Mass. Maritime Uses Big First Half to Down Gators

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Massachusetts Maritime Academy (MMA) sophomore Aoife Callinan (West Falmouth, Mass.) scored a pair of goals while four other players recorded their first markers of the season as the Buccaneers defeated Pine Manor College women's soccer 6-0 on Saturday afternoon at Hedley Field.

Junior Emily Behen (Danvers, Mass.) opened the scoring at 14:27 of the first, scoring from the top of the penalty area, before Callinan scored from a similar location at both 22:43 and 29:17 to give MMA the 3-0 advantage just thirty minutes into the contest.

Dahlia Seggelin (Sharon, Mass.) made the score 4-0 at 32:46 of the first, making a long run from midfield before beating Pine Manor goalkeeper Maria Vaughan (Okinawa, Japan). Vaughan made 12 saves for the Gators as MMA finished with a 26-5 shot advantage.

A pair of MMA first-years scored their first collegiate goals in the first half as Stephaine Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.) and Alexandra Sheeran combined to make the score line 6-0. Hunt scored on a feed from Sheeran at 33:09 before Sheeran took advantage of a loose ball in the box to score the Buccaneers final goal at 39:27.

Katie Levesque (Wilmot, N.H.) got the start in goal for MMA but wasn't called into action before being replaced by Hunt in the second half.

After scoring a goal in the first, Hunt made a pair of big saves on PMC junior Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.), pictured, to preserve the combined shutout for MMA. Lynch finished with all five Pine Manor shots in the contest, including the only two shots on goal.

Both teams will play Anna Maria College next on their schedules. The Gators are set to visit Paxton, Mass. for a 4:00 PM contest on Monday, while Mass. Maritime will host the AMCATS on Thursday at 7:00 PM.
