Gators Face Setback Against Lasers

NEWTON, Mass. – Pine Manor outscored Lasell 31-27 in the second half, but it wasn't enough to overcome the Lasers' explosive first period as the Gators fell 77-53 on Thursday night.

Pine Manor is now 11-9 on the year, while Lasell improves to 9-15.

Freshman guard Sabrina Vail (Lowell, Mass.) was the Gators leading scorer putting up 12. Senior Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.) was the only player with double-digit rebounds with 10.

Lasell got an impressive 31-point performance from junior guard Katie Stopera (Hollis, N.H.) who also had seven rebounds. Stopera's rebound total trailed only Breeana Williams (Bloomfield, Conn.) who had a team-high eight.

The Lasers dominated straight out of the gate as they opened the game with a 13-0 run over the first four minutes before Vail was able to end it with a layup. She added a free throw to complete the three-point play.

Lasell continued to control the game as it extended its lead to as much as 33 going 18-for-37 (48.6 percent) from the field and hitting 10 three-pointers in the first half. Stopera was especially effective early on scoring 21 first-half points for the hosts.

The Gators struggled to get the shots to fall shooting only 22.5 percent for the first half.

Pine Manor stepped up its defensive game in the second half holding the hosts to a 35 percent shooting clip in the final act. However, the Lasers matched the Gators' effort and were able to maintain their sizable lead.

The visitors had a 12-0 run late in the period, but it wasn't enough to overcome their foes.

Lasell will wrap up its regular season on Saturday when the Lasers visit Norwich at 1 p.m.

Pine Manor plays its final home game of the season on Sunday when they play host to Johnson State at 2 p.m.
