WORCESTER, Mass. – After trailing for most of the second half, the Gators took a 64-63 lead with four minutes remaining. However, Clark outlasted Pine Manor down the stretch and handed the visitors a 72-66 loss on Thursday evening.
With the loss Pine Manor is now 10-8 on the year, while Clark improves to 5-17.
Freshman Erica Jones (Atlanta, Ga.) had a double-double for the Gators grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds to go along with 15 points. Junior Alexis Lee (Akron, Ohio) led all scorers with 20 points in the game. Junior Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.) also had double-digit points with 13.
Clark had two players record double-doubles as sophomores Gwyneth Ivory (Ashland, Mass.) and Aretha Sullivan (Worcester, Mass.) both accomplished the feat. Ivory had 18 points to lead the team, followed closely by Sullivan who had 15. They each had a game-high 12 rebounds.
In the first half the Gators held a 32-21 advantage with six minutes left in the period before the Cougars worked their way back into the game. The hosts went on a 13-0 run to close out the half and took a 34-32 lead into the break.
Pine Manor regained the lead just two minutes into the second act on a Lynch three-pointer, but Clark followed that up with an 8-0 run to take back the lead.
The Cougars held the advantage for the next 13 minutes with Pine Manor slowly chipping away at the deficit. Lynch hit another three to give her team the lead again around the four-minute mark, but Sullivan answered on Clark's next possession with a three of her own.
The Gators' shooting went cold down the stretch as they only scored once more in the final four minutes. The Cougars made their free throws in the waning seconds to ice the game.
Pine Manor returns home on Saturday when it will host Maine-Fort Kent at 1 p.m. This game will also be the team's Play 4Kay event as they join the effort to raise breast cancer awareness.
The Cougars return to action on Monday as they visit Smith for a 7 p.m. NEWMAC contest.
