NASHUA, N.H. – Junior guard Alexis Lee (Akron, Ohio) hit a floater in the lane with nine seconds remaining in overtime to lift Pine Manor to the hard-fought 97-95 win over Rivier at the Muldoon Center on Thursday night.
The win moves the Gators to 8-6 on the year, while the Raiders fall to 7-9.
Sophomore captain Maria Vaughan (Okinawa, Japan) scored a team-best 20 points for Pine Manor. Senior Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.) added 15 points and a team-high seven rebounds. Lee took a few steps forward in her quest to join the 1000-point club as she collected 17 leaving her just 37 away from the milestone.
Rivier senior Deanna Purcell (Hudson, N.H.) eclipsed the 2000 career-point mark as she led all scorers with 24 points. Sophomore Savanna Butterfield (Londonderry, N.H.) had a double-double for the hosts.
The Gators got a huge contribution from the bench in the first half as their reserves were responsible for more than half of Pine Manor's offensive output in the period. Strong shooting performances from both teams kept the game close with Pine Manor shooting 50 percent from the field to Rivier's 46 percent. At halftime the Gators held a slim 40-38 lead.
The battle continued in the second half as neither team was able to pull away. The largest lead came midway through the period when the Raiders pulled ahead by six, but the Gators quickly closed the gap. The two teams finished regulation tied at 88.
Pine Manor scored the first four points in overtime before Rivier was able to even the score at 92. Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.) hit a three-pointer to give her team the lead back, but Rivier was able to answer to tie the score at 95.
With 24 seconds on the game clock, the Gators decided to isolate Lee who drove into the paint and floated a shot over the collapsing Raider defense for the eventual game-winner.
The Raiders return to Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play in their next contest as they travel to Providence to take on Johnson & Wales (R.I.) at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.
Pine Manor will also be in action on Saturday when it visits Fisher at 1 p.m. This game is the makeup from last Saturday's snow cancelation.
