LYNDONVILLE, Vt. – Pine Manor finished the game off on a 19-6 run to hold off Lyndon State's comeback effort and earn the 90-74 victory on Tuesday evening.
The win pushes the Gators back over the .500-mark for the year as they improve to 7-6. Lyndon State falls to 3-11.
Junior captain Alexis Lee (Akron, Ohio) scored a game-high 26 points for the Gators putting her just 54 points shy of 1000 for her career. Her classmate Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.) contributed 20 points including four three-pointers.
Freshman center Makayla Hodge (Newbury, Vt.) led the way for the Hornets with 19 points. Junior forward Aimee Thompson (Barnet, Vt.) added 16 points and 10 rebounds.
The Gators outshot the Hornets 50 percent to 32.4 percent in the first half. Halfway through the period, Pine Manor led 23-21. The guests would balloon their lead to nine with an 8-1 run before Emily Gray (Quincy, Mass.) hit a three-pointer to cut the deficit to six. Lynch responded immediately with a three-pointer of her own to reestablish the nine point advantage.
Pine Manor went into halftime leading 47-36, but then the teams' shooting fortunes changed. In the second half, Lyndon State held the 58.1 percent to 33.3 percent shooting advantage as the hosts worked their way back into the game.
Trailing 57-46 with 15 minutes remaining, the Hornets used a 9-0 run to pull within two. Three minutes later, they tied the game at 59 with a Thompson jumper.
The hosts would finally grab the lead with 7:09 left in the game when Thompson converted a pair of free throws to make the score 64-63 Hornets.
However, senior forward Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.) gave her team the lead right back as she made a jump shot.
Strong free throw shooting down the stretch helped the Gators secure the game down the stretch as the Hornets got into the foul game. Pine Manor made 11 of its 15 chances from the charity strip in the final two minutes.
Pine Manor returns to action on Saturday when it travels to Fisher for a 1 p.m. tipoff.
Lyndon State's next game is on Friday when it visits Maine Maritime in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action at 5:30 p.m.
