CHESTNUST HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor's return home was a sweet one as the Gators ended a three-game losing streak with an 81-69 victory over the University of Maine-Augusta.
The Gators' victory brings them back to .500 at 6-6, while Maine-Augusta drops to 10-7.
Sophomore captain Maria Vaughan (Okinawa, Japan) led the Gators with 20 points, including four three-pointers. Senior Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.) had 17 points of her own and also led the team with eight rebounds.
Freshman Carmen Bragg (Washburn, Maine) had a game-best 25 points and seven three-pointers for the Moose. Sophomore forward Jamie Plummer (Richmond, Maine) had double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Freshman Kylie Kemp (Monmouth, Maine) collected a game-high 16 rebounds.
The game was extremely close until late in the first half when the Gators started to pull away. Tied at 22 with seven minutes remaining, the hosts went on a 12-2 run sparked by a Vaughan three-pointer, to take a 10-point lead.
Pine Manor continued to add to the lead in the waning minutes of the half and went into the break up 45-31.
In the second half, Bragg tried to will her team back into the game as she scored eight points, including two threes, in opening minutes of the period, but the Gators always had an answer. Jones made a layup around the 17-minute mark to give Pine Manor its biggest lead of the game at 53-36.
About half way through the period, Jessica St. Amand (Windsor, Maine) cut the deficit back down to single digits as her layup made the score 57-49, but Vaughan hit another three to extend the lead again.
The Moose would get a close as eight on two occasions, but couldn't overcome the Gators who went on to the 81-69 win.
Pine Manor will try to get back above the .500-mark on Tuesday when they travel to Lyndon State for a 7 p.m. game.
Maine-Augusta will be idle for a week. It travels to Hampshire on Jan. 24 in its return to conference play. Tip off is at 2 p.m.
