PAXTON, Mass. – Anna Maria dominated the play in the paint as they outscored Pine Manor 54-22 and cruised to a 74-50 victory on Monday evening at the Fuller Activities Center.
Pine Manor drops back to 5-4 on the year and Anna Maria improves to 6-8.
Junior captain Alexis Lee (Akron, Ohio) was the Gators top scorer with 15 points. Freshman forward Erica Jones (Atlanta, Ga.) was the only other player for Pine Manor in double figures with 10 points. Khiyana Isaac (Roxbury, Mass.) had 12 rebounds for the visitors.
Senior Trafficia Warburton (Worcester, Mass.) led the way for Anna Maria picking up a double-double with 14 points and 22 rebounds. Sophomore guard Christina Gauvin (Dudley, Mass.) had 17 points to lead the team.
Shots were not dropping for either team early on and Pine Manor missed its first eleven shots from the field. Their only points in the first seven minutes of the game were a pair of free throws from Lee around the seven-minute mark. The AMCATS had a bit more success scoring four of their first 15 and opening up a six point lead.
Anna Maria's shooting improved as they converted seven of their next 10 attempts from the field and extended their lead to twelve with under seven minutes remaining in the half.
The Gators responded with a 7-0 run, bookended by a pair a baskets by Lee, to get the lead back down to five with about four minutes remaining in the half.
The hosts scored the next six points, including a layup by Kristina Russo (South Windsor, Conn.), to get the lead back to double digits. Pine Manor scored the last four points of the half and went into the locker room trailing 29-22.
The second half belonged to the AMCATS as they extended their lead to as much as 27, including 11 points from Gauvin. Anna Maria went 21-for-43 (48.8 percent) in the second period, outscoring its opponent 48-28.
Next up for the Gators is another Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) foe, as they visit local rival Mount Ida at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Anna Maria is off until Saturday when it travels to Standish, Maine for a GNAC matchup with the Saint Joseph (Maine) Monks at 1 p.m.
