CHESTNUST HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor shot 47 percent from the field to beat the College of New Rochelle, 88-69, for the Gators first win in 2015.
Pine Manor improves to 5-3 this season and New Rochelle falls back to 6-5.
Junior forward Khiyana Isaac (Roxbury, Mass.) recorded her first double-double of the year with an impressive 15 point, 12 rebound performance. Sophomore captain Maria Vaughan (Okinawa, Japan) led the Gators with 17 points.
New Rochelle senior Jan-Leah Ellis (Chicago, Ill.) had 24 points to lead all scorers. She also had 12 rebounds, eight steals, and five assists. Senior guard Alyssa Pechin (Yonkers, N.Y.) had 17 points for the guests.
The Gators established a seven-point lead over the first five minutes of the game. The Blue Angels closed the gap to two thanks to a three-pointer by Hannah Cambel (Houston, Texas) and a layup by Ellis.
The game remained extremely close until around the eight-minute mark when Pine Manor started to pull away. Leading by five, Jayva Johnson (West Haven, Conn.) made two layups and Vaughan knocked down a three-pointer to extend the hosts' lead to 12.
Pechin helped the Blue Angels back into the game as she scored all 10 of her first-half points in the final four minutes. Her two free throws just under the one-minute mark, made the score 39-38. The Gators would outscore New Rochelle 5-1 in the final minute, including a three-pointer by Shaquanda Middleton (Savannah, Ga.), to bring a 44-39 lead into the half.
Pine Manor opened the second half with a 12-5 run, capped off by a pair of Isaac lay-ins, to extend its lead to 12. The Gators shot 57.7 percent in the second period and held a double-digit lead for most of the remaining time on the way to their first win of the new year.
The Gators will try to get the semester's first road win on Monday when it travels to Anna Maria at 6 p.m.
New Rochelle will head to Cambridge, Mass. tomorrow as it takes on Lesley at 3 p.m.
