NEW LONDON, Conn. – Coast Guard outshot Pine Manor 54.3 to 21.3 percent as they cruised past the Gators, 89-33, on Thursday evening.
With the loss, Pine Manor falls to 4-3 and Coast Guard gets back to .500 at 5-5.
Freshman forward Gill Gerton (Lorton, Va.) had a double-double for the Bears scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds. Junior Torie Sutherland (Houston, Texas) had 18 points to lead her team as she went 8-for-9 from the field.
The Bears dominated on the boards, outrebounding Pine Manor 56-28, including a 40-17 advantage on the offensive glass.
Pine Manor fell behind early as the Bears outscored the Gators 10-2 in the first five minutes of the game with sophomore Maria Vaughan (Okinawa, Japan) recording the only basket for the guests.
Coast Guard extended the lead to double-digits with 12:34 remaining in the first half as Leigha Steinbeck (Parker, Colo.) made a jump shot to give the Bears the 17-6 lead.
They continued to add to their lead, finishing the half on a 16-2 run and went into the break leading 49-15.
It was more of the same in the second half as the Gators were outscored 40-18 in the closing act and Coast Guard finished the commanding victory.
Pine Manor will try to regroup as it plays its first home game of the new year on Saturday. The Gators will host to the College of New Rochelle at 5 p.m.
Coast Guard is also back in action on Saturday as the Bears host Emerson in their return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at 3 p.m.
