CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor outscored Simmons 64-35 in the second half to capture the come-from-behind victory, 89-73, at Brunelli Court on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Gators close out their first semester schedule with a 4-1 record. The loss drops Simmons to 1-5 on the year.
Freshman forward Erica Jones (Atlanta, Ga.) led all scorers with 21 points, including 13 in the second half. Co-captain Alexis Lee (Akron, Ohio) and junior guard Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.) had big second halves from beyond the arc as they combined to shoot 7-for-12 from downtown.
Sophomore forward Ashley McAdams (Freeport, N.Y.) recorded a double-double for the Sharks scoring 10 points and grabbing a game-high 12 boards. Fellow sophomore Jamie Zoldy (Watertown, Conn.) led her team in scoring with 14 points.
Simmons had a very strong first half highlighted by a 15-0 run that helped the Sharks build a 26-9 lead. Zoldy and junior forward Gracie Rolfe (Newton. Mass.) were influential during the rally, scoring 6 and 5 points respectively. Both players finished the first half with 10 points.The guests shot 57.7 percent from the field in the opening act and went into the break leading 13.
The Gators came out aggressively in the second half, employing a heavy full-court press. The pressure defense combined with much improved shooting (53.7 percent) helped the hosts chip away at the lead.
The Sharks continued to hold off their opponents until Lee hit a three-pointer around the 10-minute mark to even the score at 56. Threes became the theme for the Gators from that point forward as Pine Manor hit seven of them down the stretch to complete the comeback.
Pine Manor will return for the first game of the new year on Tuesday, Jan. 6 when they travel to Framingham State for a 6 p.m. start.
Simmons has one more challenge before it is off for the winter break. The Sharks play at UMass Boston on Tuesday, Dec. 9 at 7 p.m.
