CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Pine Manor women's basketball team started its 2014-15 campaign off on the right foot with a commanding 105-66 home victory over Lesley on Saturday afternoon.
Sophomore Jayva Johnson (West Haven, Conn.) paced the Gators offensively scoring a game-high 23 points, including five baskets from beyond the arc. Senior Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.), sophomore Sybil Lynch (Hoboken, N.J.), and sophomore Maria Vaughan (Okinawa, Japan) also scored double figures. Vaughan also had 12 assists on the day.
However, Pine Manor would then go on a 10-2 run, capped by a steal and score by Franklin, to extend the gap. The Gators made the most of their turnovers this afternoon, scoring 43 points off takeaways.
The hosts went into the break up 50-35 and carried their offensive momentum into the second half. They came out with a 10-4 run, including two more threes from Johnson, to extend their lead to 22.
The Gators would continue to attack down the stretch, breaking through the 100-point barrier, with just over two-minutes remaining, on a long-range shot by freshman guard Sabrina Vail (Lowell, Mass.). A free throw by Chaniyah Swan (Jersey City, N.J.) in the waning seconds of the game gave the Gators a 39-point lead, their largest of the night.
Pine Manor will hit the road next Tuesday for their first road game of the season as they play Becker at 7 p.m.
The next stop on the Lynx's three-game, season-opening road trip is Mount Ida on Thursday at 6 p.m.
