CHESTNUT HILL, Mass.- This afternoon the Wheelock College softball team split a pair of games against visiting Pine Manor College. The Wildcats nearly completed a big seventh inning rally in game one but fell short in a 10-8 loss before defeating the Gators in game two, 12-4. Wheelock moves to 1-7 on the season while Pine Manor goes to 3-1.
The first game started quickly for both teams. The Gators struck in the top of the first with two runs but the Wildcats answered in the bottom of the frame with RBI base knocks by sophomore Lacey Allen (Gloucester, Mass.) and classmate Rachael Simpson (Littleton, Mass.) to knot it at 2-2.
Pine Manor broke the contest open in the top of the second when they got an RBI double from sophomore Ashley Whiteshield, an RBI single by rookie Brittny Desmond, and then capped it off with a two-run shot to deep left-center field off the bat of freshman Ashley Huber.
The Gators would build on that 6-2 advantage and carried a 10-4 lead into the final inning. The Wildcats began their rally when senior Katie Fleming (West Boylston, Mass.) doubled in two runs to close the deficit to 10-6. Wheelock continued to chip away with an error and fielder's choice that made it a 10-8 game. Finally, however, with runners on first and second and two outs, Pine Manor starter Amber Schuman induced a game-ending groundout.
Wheelock featured five players with multiple hit afternoons, led by rookie Samantha Leahon (Castleton, N.Y.) who went 3-for-5 with a run scored. Fleming also had a strong contest going 2-for-3 with a run scored and a game-high four RBI.
Pine Manor also had five players who racked up multiple hits included a 3-for-3 game with three runs and an RBI by senior Natasia Franklin. Huber led the team with three RBI.
In the circle, Schuman earned the win after her complete game effort while Wheelock junior Maggie Doyle (Kingston, Mass.) took the loss.
The nightcap again featured fast starts offensively by both teams. First, the Gators scored four runs off of three hits capped by a two RBI single from Whiteshield.
Still, the Wildcats answered with three scores of their own in the bottom of the frame highlighted by a two RBI base knock off the bat of Allen.
This contest would continue to swing in the home team's favor as sophomore starter Emma Spencer (Thomaston, Maine) held Pine Manor scoreless for the remaining four innings. During that span, Wheelock poured on nine more runs to earn the 12-4 victory in five innings.
The Wildcats were led by rookie Dominique DelBene (Peabody, Mass.) who went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. Allen also chipped in two RBI while Fleming crossed the plate twice in her four at bats.
Huber led the Gators with a perfect on base percentage from a 1-for-1 game including a run scored and two walks.
Spencer earned the win after five innings and four runs allowed (one earned) while striking out three. Huber took the loss following 1+ innings where she allowed nine runs (five earned) and fanned one batter.
Wheelock returns to action on Saturday April 2nd when they host Regis College for a doubleheader at 12 and 2 p.m. Pine Manor hosts UMPI tomorrow for a doubleheader at 2 and 4 p.m.
