CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – Pine Manor closed out is 2015 campaign on Wednesday evening dropping both ends of a doubleheader to Wheelock. The Gators lost 9-1 in five innings in game one before falling 10-2 in the second game, a six-inning affair.
The Gators finish the year with a 2-22 record, while Wheelock ends its 2015 season with a 4-23 record.
The front end of Wednesday's twin bill started off as a pitchers' duel. There were just four hits and one run scored in the first three frames.
Junior Chardonai Rose (Fairfield, Calif.) got the start for the hosts and held the Wildcats hitless for the first three innings. Wheelock starter Maggie Doyle (Kingston, Mass.) was just as strong for the guests.
The sophomore hurler's one blemish came in the second as senior Natasia Franklin (Windsor, Conn.) led off the inning, reaching on a two-base error. She would come around to score on an infield single by Rachel Julien (Brockton, Mass.).
Wheelock was finally able to solve Rose in the top of the fourth. They scored five runs in the inning to take the lead. The big knocks came off the bats of Katie Fleming (West Boylston, Mass.), who drove in three with an inside the park home run to left, and Becca House (Middlebury, Conn.) who drove in two with a double.
The bats kept going for the Wildcats in the fifth as they added four more. Fleming added another RBI with a double to center, while Rachael Simpson (Littleton, Mass.) and Doyle each had RBI-singles.
Doyle earned the victory allowing just one unearned run and striking out six, while Rose took the loss despite picking up five punch outs.
Simpson and Fleming continued to be forces in the Wildcat offense in the nightcap as they each collected three more hits.
They both had RBI-singles in Wheelock's three-run second. Kiersten Cosgrove (Pequannock, N.J.) also drove in a run inning. Wheelock added two more in the third to take a 5-0 lead.
The Gators got one back in the fourth as Franklin led off the inning with a double to right center. Rose would then bring her home with an RBI-triple to right.
Wheelock padded its lead with two more runs in the fifth with Molly Rose (Weymouth, Mass.) and Simpson delivering the run-scoring hits. Rose and Simpson each drove in another run in the sixth to push the Wildcats into double-digits.
The Gators would score once in the bottom of the inning on Cathryn White's (Douglas, Mass.) RBI-double, but that was all the hosts could muster.
Sophomore Vanessa Valenti (Woodstock, Conn.) pitched all six innings in the circle and struck out eight for the win. Rose took the loss for the Gators and struck out three.
