BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. – Pine Manor scored three runs in the first inning of game two on Thursday afternoon, but was still swept by Mass. Maritime in a couple of five inning outings.
The Buccaneers took game one 16-0 before handing the Gators a 16-3 defeat in the nightcap.
The sweep drops Pine Manor's record to 0-14 on the year, while Mass. Maritime improves to 2-8 with its first two wins of the season.
Freshman pitcher Carli Thomas (Brewster, Mass.) got the start for the Buccaneers in game one. She allowed just two hits and struck out seven as she pitched the five-inning complete game for her first victory of the season. She was opposed by junior Chardonai Rose (Fairfield, Calif.) who struck out two and took the loss.
The hosts got to Rose early in the first, scoring six runs, but she was able to settle down in the second and retire the side in order.
The bats really got going for Mass. Maritime in the third with the bottom of the order doing a lot of the damage. Second baseman Sarah Monteiro (North Falmouth, Mass.) had a triple and a double in the inning and drove in four of her five RBI. The Buccaneers tacked on a total of eight runs in the inning to take a 14-0 lead.
The Gators finally broke up Thomas's no-hit bid in the top of the fourth as Vanessa Soto (Fontana, Calif.) led off the inning with a single. She stole second to get into scoring position, but she would be stranded there. After walking Ari DeJesus (Providence, R.I.) the freshman hurler got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts.
She helped add some insurance in the bottom of the inning with an RBI-triple. The hosts added one more to the total as Jessica Holleran (Methuan, Mass.) walked to force in a run and give the Buccaneers a 16-0 win.
In game two, the Gators got off to a strong start scoring three in the first. Anastasia Walker (West Springfield, Mass.) drew a leadoff walk to get the rally started. Two batters later Soto was hit by a pitch to give the guests a pair of baserunners. Rose did her job in the cleanup spot as she smashed a triple to left field for Pine Manor's first runs of the afternoon. Catcher Cathryn White (Douglas, Mass.) was eventually able to bring her home with an RBI-single to center.
Despite the rough first, Maritime starter Cassidy Nice (Carver, Mass.) was still able to earn the win, her first of the year, as the Buccaneer offense had another strong performance. Nice allowed just three hits over five inning and struck out four.
The Buccaneers picked up the sophomore pitcher right away as they hung a 10-spot in the first inning. Emily Bacchiocchi (Wareham, Mass.) had a couple of singles and three RBI, while Thomas and Elizabeth Bramhall (Plymouth, Mass.) each had two-RBI doubles in the inning.
The hosts picked up four more runs in the second and closed out the scoring in the third with another pair of scores.
Pine Manor next travels to Fisher for a Saturday afternoon doubleheader against the Falcons. First pitch is scheduled for 11 a.m.
Mass. Maritime heads to North Adams, Mass. on Saturday afternoon for a MASCAC doubleheader against MCLA that starts at 1 p.m.
