Soto Scores, But Gators Swept by Bay Path

LONGMEADOW, Mass. – Juniors Vanessa Soto (Fontana, Calif.) and Anastasia Walker (West Springfield, Mass.) each had three hits on the afternoon, but Pine Manor took two losses at the hands of Bay Path on Tuesday afternoon.

The Wildcats shutout the Gators 18-0 in game one of the twin bill and won 13-1 on the backend to improve their record to 4-13. Pine Manor falls to 0-12.

Game 1

The Gators offense looked like it was poised for a big afternoon as it collected three hits in the first. Walker started off the game with a double to left, but was quickly erased on a fielder's choice. Soto and shortstop Chardonai Rose (Fairfield, Calif.) followed up with back-to-back singles to load the bases.

After that the Wildcat defense was able to step up and cut down the runner at home and got out of the inning when Bay Path starter Sarah Paskiewicz (Ansonia, Conn.) struck out Cathryn White (Douglas, Mass.) to end the inning. Paskiewicz settled in after the first and only allowed one more hit in the game as she went the distance for the shutout victory.

Walker got the start for Pine Manor and took the loss as the Bay Path offense got to her early, scoring seven runs in the first. It followed that up with three runs in the second and eight more in the third.

Freshman Gillian Flynn (Windsor, Conn.) and junior Paige Marshall (New Britain, Conn.) each had doubles for the hosts and junior Anna Meyer had an inside-the-park home run. Casey Botelho (Providence, R.I.) had three RBI for the Wildcats in game one.

Game 2

In game two, Maria Carter (Middletown, Conn.) got the start for the Wildcats. She pitched five innings and struck out four for the victory. Rose was in the circle for the Gators and took the loss.

Bay Path got the scoring started early again in the nightcap scoring four in the first off Rose. The big knock came off the bat of Meyer who tripled to drive in a run.

They added seven more in the second including RBI doubles from Flynn, Paskiewicz, and Lauren Vallee (Bristol, Conn.). Flynn and leftfielder Botelho both had three-hit games for the hosts.

After a scoreless third, the Gators were finally able to get on the board in the fourth. Soto led off the inning with a double and eventually scored on a wild pitch for the Gators only run of the day.

The Wildcats tacked on two more in the bottom of the inning to close out the scoring.
