Owls Spoil Pine Manor’s Home Opener

Owls Spoil Pine Manor’s Home Opener
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Pine Manor Softball Field finally saw its first action of the year as the Gators opened up with a doubleheader against the University of Maine-Presque Isle. However, the Owls put a damper on the Gators' homecoming as they swept the two-game set.

Katie Patenaude (Presque Isle, Maine) had a big day offensively driving in four runs in the game one and going a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in game two. Freshman pitcher Sara Packard (St Albans, Maine) was impressive in the circle allowing just three hits in eight innings of work.

Ari DeJesus (Providence, R.I.) had two hits on the day and also stole the team's first base of 2015.

The sweep drops the Gators record to 0-8 on the year, while the Owls improve to 7-9.

Game 1

UMPI got the offense started early as they scored seven in the first inning of game one. The biggest knock came on Patenaude's three-run single.

Those runs would be plenty for Packard who was nearly unhittable for the Owls. She held the hosts to just one hit, while striking out seven.

The Owls added one more in the second and four in the third to extend their lead to 12 before Pine Manor starter Chardonai Rose (Fairfield, Calif.) settled in to hold UMPI scoreless in the fourth.

In the bottom of that inning, Vanessa Soto (Fontana, Calif.) hit a hard liner back up the box that deflected off Packard for Pine Manor's lone hit in the game.

Packard was able to work her away around the hit and get her team into the fifth where they would tack on three more insurance runs for the 15-0 victory.

Game 2

Soto got the start in the circle for game two and was touched up for just a single run in the first as Whitney Donovan (Ashland, Maine) drove in Carly Bell (Presque Isle, Maine).

The big inning for the Owls was the second as they put up another seven spot, taking advantage of a few defensive miscues by Pine Manor and getting a timely double by Dani Smith that drove in two.

In the bottom of the inning, DeJesus collected her first of two hits on the afternoon and stole her first collegiate base. However, she would be stranded there as Packard, who got the start again in game two, continued to silence the Gator bats.

The Gators finally broke through in the bottom of the fourth. Facing sophomore Amanda Allen (Limestone, Maine), who relieved Packard, Pine Manor was able to string together a couple hits. After Rose and DeJesus both singled, Eboni Jackson (Prince George's County, Md.) was able to bring in the Gators' only run of the day with a bloop single.

Pine Manor is back on the Pine Manor Softball Field tomorrow afternoon as they play host to Fisher for a twin bill scheduled to start at 3 p.m.

UMPI next plays on Saturday, April 18 as the Owls visit Maine-Farmington for a doubleheader starting at 3 p.m.
