MILFORD, N.H. – Pine Manor's softball season finally got underway this morning, but things didn't go their way as they dropped the five-inning affair to Daniel Webster, 18-3, at the Hampshire Dome.
Junior Chardonai Rose (Fairfield, Cal.) picked up a pair of hits for the Gators in their season opener while Jakenda Williams (Menlo Park, Cal.) added a two-run single in the second inning. Anastasia Walker (West Springfield, Mass.) was touched for the loss.
Newcomer Kathryn Noreen (Juneau, Alaska) knocked in four runs and senior Sarah Durocher (Keene, N.H.) added three RBI as host Daniel Webster ran its record to 3-0 to start a season for the first time in program history.
Kayla Free (Quincy, Mass.) added a solo inside-the-park home run and posted two RBI while Abigail Goslin (Wrentham, Mass.) went five innings to post her first collegiate victory in the pitcher's circle.
The Eagles were aided by seven Pine Manor errors leading to five unearned runs. DWC posted seven hits total in the contest.
The Eagles plated seven runs in the bottom of the first on just two hits, as DWC drew seven walks and a hit batsman in the frame and Noreen connected for a two-run single.
The Gators got two back in the top of the second as the first three batters reached to load the bases. Williams singled to drive in Cathryn White (Douglas, Mass.) and Ari DeJesus (Providence, R.I.) for Pine Manor's first scores of the season.
In the bottom of the inning, DWC plated a pair of unearned runs for a 9-2 lead before the DeJesus pushed the Gators' final run across in the third on a bases loaded walk.
The hosts ended things with an eight-run fourth which included Free's leadoff homer, the first of her career. The Eagles were aided by three walks and four PMC errors in the frame, while Durocher connected for a two-run double.
The teams complete their two-game set Monday night at 9 p.m. at the Dome.
